QUANTUMX — PROC-X MANUFACTURING GROUP
QuantumX Vacuum Mixers & Dryers
Advanced mixing, vacuum drying & thermal processing in one engineered system. QuantumX Vacuum Mixers & Dryers combine industrial mixing, controlled heat transfer, vacuum processing, evaporation, drying, cooling, deaeration, solvent recovery and particle conditioning within a single engineered process platform.
These are not simply conventional mixers with a vacuum pump attached. A properly engineered vacuum mixer dryer is a complete thermal and mass-transfer system in which vessel geometry, agitator design, mixing intensity, active surface area, heat-transfer surface, vacuum level, vapour handling, condenser design and process controls all work together.
QuantumX systems are engineered around one fundamental principle: the material must remain in controlled motion while heat and vacuum are continuously applied. That movement continually renews the product surface exposed to the heated vessel, releases trapped moisture or solvent, prevents localized overheating and creates more uniform drying conditions throughout the batch.
The QuantumX portfolio includes multiple horizontal and vertical vacuum mixer-dryer technologies because no single agitator geometry is ideal for every product:
- Horizontal Vacuum Ribbon Mixers & Dryers
- Horizontal Vacuum Ploughshare Mixers & Dryers
- Horizontal Vacuum Paddle Mixers & Dryers
- Vacuum High-Speed Granulators & Dryers
- Vacuum Fluidized-Zone Mixers & Dryers
- Vertical Vacuum Ribbon Mixers & Dryers
- Vertical Vacuum Paddle Mixers & Dryers
- Vertical Vacuum Conical Mixers & Dryers
The correct technology is selected around the material — not around whichever machine happens to be available.
How Vacuum Drying Works
At atmospheric pressure, water boils at approximately 100°C. Reduce the surrounding pressure and the boiling temperature falls — the same principle applies to many solvents. Inside a QuantumX vacuum mixer dryer, several mechanisms occur simultaneously, which is why performance is determined by much more than nominal vessel volume or vacuum-pump size:
1. Heat Transfer
Thermal energy passes from the jacketed vessel surfaces into the product.
2. Product Movement
The agitator continuously redistributes material and brings new product into contact with heated surfaces.
3. Evaporation
Moisture or solvent absorbs thermal energy and converts into vapour.
4. Vacuum Removal
The vacuum system continuously removes vapour from the processing chamber.
5. Surface Renewal
Mixing exposes new wet surfaces and releases vapour trapped within the product mass.
6. Vapour Conditioning
The vapour can be filtered, condensed, recovered or treated depending on the process.
Why Mixing Is Critical to Vacuum Drying
Vacuum alone does not guarantee efficient drying. If wet material remains static inside a heated vessel, material touching the vessel wall can dry first — that dried material can then become an insulating layer between the heated wall and the wetter material inside the batch, resulting in poor heat transfer, extended drying time, uneven final moisture, localized overheating, product degradation, wet pockets, and inconsistent batch quality.
QuantumX agitator systems continually disrupt this condition — lifting, folding, conveying, mechanically fluidizing, redistributing, breaking agglomerates, exposing new surface, and returning wetter material to the heat-transfer surfaces. The objective is continuous renewal of both heat-transfer surface and evaporation surface.
Heat Transfer and Mass Transfer
Efficient vacuum drying requires both: heat transfer — energy entering the material through vessel jackets, heated end plates, heated shafts or heated mixing elements — and mass transfer — the resulting vapour escaping from the material and leaving the processing vessel. QuantumX designs the complete system around this relationship: heat transfer into the material + vapour transfer out of the material.
Why Product Surface Area Matters
Evaporation occurs at exposed surfaces. A poorly designed agitator may simply rotate the material as a large mass; an optimised agitator continually separates, folds, lifts or redistributes the product, increasing effective surface exposure and significantly improving drying efficiency. QuantumX evaluates agitator geometry, active mixing surface, vessel geometry, product fill level, rotational speed, product rheology, particle characteristics and drying behaviour as an integrated process system.
Why Vacuum Processing Changes the Process
Vacuum drying is often discussed only as a method of lowering the boiling point — its advantages extend considerably beyond that:
- Lower drying temperatures
- Improved protection of heat-sensitive materials
- Removal of entrained air
- Reduced oxidation potential
- Controlled solvent removal & recovery
- Improved deaeration
- More controlled thermal processing
- Closed-system product handling
For high-value materials, these advantages may be more important than drying speed alone.
QuantumX Vacuum Mixer & Dryer Technologies
Different materials behave differently when wet, heated, dried or placed under vacuum — QuantumX therefore offers multiple mixing geometries, each producing a different relationship between mixing intensity, particle movement, shear, heat transfer, surface renewal, discharge and product protection.
Vacuum Ribbon Mixers & Dryers
Combines the proven convective action of a ribbon agitator — inner and outer helical flights moving product in opposing axial directions — with jacketed thermal processing and vacuum. During drying, this circulation repeatedly brings wet material toward heated surfaces while moving previously heated material back into the bulk product. Ribbon width, flight pitch, number of flights, radial clearance and swept surface area all influence circulation, making the vacuum ribbon mixer dryer particularly suitable for powders, granules, food ingredients, nutraceutical powders, specialty chemicals, and many general-purpose drying applications. Available in both horizontal and vertical configurations.
Horizontal
Large mixing volume, strong axial movement — suited to high-capacity batch processing, rapid circulation, liquid addition, and integration into continuous production systems.
Vertical
Compact footprint with gentle particle handling — attractive for pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, cohesive and fragile powders, and temperature-sensitive materials.
Vacuum Ploughshare Mixers & Dryers
Designed for processes requiring substantially higher product movement and mixing intensity. Plough-shaped elements mechanically accelerate particles away from the vessel wall, creating a mechanically fluidized mixing zone — particles repeatedly separate, accelerate, change direction, contact heated surfaces, expose new wet surfaces, and recombine, creating excellent conditions for heat and mass transfer. Especially valuable for cohesive powders, difficult drying applications, powders that tend to agglomerate, wet solids, and demanding multiphase applications. Can incorporate high-speed choppers for localised high-shear processing alongside the main plough rotor’s bulk circulation.
Vacuum Paddle Mixers & Dryers
A different balance between mixing efficiency and product protection. Strategically positioned discrete paddles lift, push, fold and redistribute material, providing excellent product movement while maintaining comparatively gentle handling — particularly suitable for fragile powders, granules, heat-sensitive products, pharmaceutical powders, coated particles, crystals, and products where particle integrity matters. Available in both horizontal and vertical configurations.
Horizontal
Broad heat-transfer exposure, fast circulation, flexible liquid addition, excellent batch access, and large discharge options. Single or multiple-shaft configurations available.
Vertical
Compact vertical geometry with reduced floor-space, gravity-assisted discharge, excellent vacuum exposure, and reduced product damage — suited to high-value products requiring controlled handling.
Vertical Vacuum Conical Mixers & Dryers
Designed for extremely gentle mixing and precision thermal processing. The conical vessel geometry naturally directs material toward the vessel outlet, promoting controlled circulation, low-energy mixing, low mechanical stress, excellent discharge, and minimal residual product. Because intensive high-speed agitation isn’t always necessary, this technology provides gentle drying conditions for fragile particles, crystals, sensitive powders, and high-value products including pharmaceutical powders, active ingredients, nanomaterials, and battery materials.
Vacuum High-Speed Granulators & Dryers
Combines controlled granulation with integrated vacuum drying in a single process environment: powder charging → dry mixing → binder addition → wet granulation → particle development → vacuum drying → cooling — without transferring product between multiple independent vessels. This reduces intermediate handling and creates greater control over the complete particle-engineering process, typical for pharmaceutical granulation, nutraceutical manufacturing, and specialty chemical processing.
Vacuum Fluidized-Zone Mixers & Dryers
Engineered to maximise active particle movement and exposed particle surface throughout the process, creating a highly dynamic material environment where particles are continually separated and redistributed — improving thermal uniformity, drying efficiency, coating performance, granulation consistency, and liquid distribution. Particularly useful for lightweight powders, protein powders, instantized products, and coated particulate products.
What Materials Can Be Processed?
QuantumX Vacuum Mixers & Dryers can be engineered for a broad range of starting materials:
- Dry, moist & wet powders
- Granules & crystals
- Filter cakes
- Slurries
- Cohesive powders
- Agglomerates
- Coated particles
- Solvent-wet solids
- High-value specialty materials
- Selected pastes / highly moist solids
Material testing may be recommended where drying behaviour is uncertain.
Processing Wet Filter Cake
Filter cake is one of the more demanding vacuum-drying applications. As moisture is removed, the material may transition through several physical states — wet cake → cohesive mass → sticky transition → agglomerated solid → dry powder — and the mixer must remain effective throughout those changing rheological conditions. A product that begins as a cohesive cake may require substantially different agitation than a free-flowing powder, which is why mixer selection is critical. QuantumX evaluates starting moisture, final moisture, cake consistency, particle size, stickiness, heat sensitivity, and solvent content when selecting the appropriate technology.
Solvent Removal, Recovery & Condenser Engineering
QuantumX systems can be engineered for solvent-bearing products, with vapour routed through a purpose-engineered recovery system — vapour filters, condensers, receivers, vacuum pumps, knock-out vessels, and secondary condensation stages. Recovered solvent can be collected for reuse, recycling, treatment or controlled disposal. The condenser is just as important as the vacuum pump: if vapour load exceeds condenser capacity, process vacuum can deteriorate, so QuantumX designs the vacuum system around expected evaporation rate, vapour composition, coolant temperature, and solvent-recovery requirements — not simply pump size.
Vapour Filtration & Deaeration
Systems can incorporate filtration between the process vessel and vacuum equipment to retain product, protect condensers and pumps, and reduce cross-contamination. Vacuum processing can also remove entrained air from powders, slurries and pastes — improving apparent bulk density, downstream filling, wetting behaviour, and product appearance, an important function even when substantial drying isn’t required.
Heating & Cooling in the Same Vessel
A typical batch can go charge → mix → heat → vacuum dry → cool → discharge, without transferring material to another vessel — reducing handling, contamination risk, equipment count and processing complexity. Because vacuum reduces boiling temperature, QuantumX systems enable evaporation at lower product temperatures, important for materials susceptible to oxidation, colour change, flavour loss, protein denaturation, or structural collapse at elevated temperature.

The correct choice depends entirely on the process.
Vacuum Mixer Dryer vs Conventional / Tray / Rotary Dryers
A conventional dryer may provide heat and airflow but limited control over product movement. A QuantumX vacuum mixer dryer combines active material circulation with reduced-pressure thermal processing — potential advantages include lower drying temperature, closed processing, better surface renewal, simultaneous mixing and drying, solvent recovery, deaeration, reduced oxidation potential, and the ability to perform several unit operations in one vessel.
Tray dryers depend primarily on exposing relatively static layers of material to heated air or vacuum; a vacuum mixer dryer continuously moves the material, improving heat transfer, evaporation surface renewal, moisture uniformity and automation. Traditional rotary vacuum dryers use vessel rotation or rotating internal components; QuantumX systems provide purpose-engineered agitator geometries selected according to the required mixing and drying behaviour — ribbon circulation, paddle circulation, ploughshare fluidization, conical gentle mixing, high-speed granulation, or fluidized-zone processing.

Engineering Options
Vacuum Mixing Under Controlled Atmosphere
Some materials require more than vacuum. QuantumX systems can be designed for controlled-atmosphere operation using inert gases such as nitrogen — for vessel purging, oxygen reduction, inert blanketing, oxidation control, vacuum breaking, and solvent-processing protection, with oxygen monitoring and automated process interlocks incorporated where required.
ATEX & Hazardous Area Designs
Combining combustible powders, solvents, heat and vacuum requires careful process engineering:
- ATEX / hazardous-area electrical requirements
- Combustible dust
- Flammable solvents
- Grounding & bonding
- Nitrogen inerting & oxygen monitoring
- Explosion isolation, venting & suppression
- Pressure protection
- Process containment
The correct protection philosophy must be determined from the specific material properties and process hazard analysis.
Sanitary & Hygienic Designs, CIP/WIP
For food, pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and other hygienic industries: 304/316L stainless steel, polished product-contact surfaces, sanitary welding, radiused internal transitions, hygienic shaft seals, sanitary vacuum filtration, sanitary discharge valves, and documented material certification. Cleaning a vacuum dryer is more demanding than a simple blender — the system can include agitators, filters, jackets, vapour lines and condensers — so CIP/WIP systems, automated spray coverage, drainability, removable components and validated cleaning sequences are designed around the complete process environment.
Liquid Addition & Multi-Step Processing
Many mixer dryers perform processes before drying begins — coating, granulation, reaction, flavour addition, binder addition, moisture conditioning, or functionalization — via metering pumps, spray bars, atomizing nozzles, heated liquid systems, and recipe-controlled addition integrated with agitator speed, temperature and vacuum sequence. A single system can potentially perform several operations sequentially, e.g. dry blend → liquid addition → coating → conditioning → vacuum drying → cooling, reducing material transfers and the associated loss, contamination risk, dust generation and processing time — particularly valuable for high-value materials, potent compounds, and hazardous or sterile processes.
Controls, Endpoint Determination & Complete Systems
PLC and HMI controls can manage agitator speed, product/jacket temperature, vessel and jacket pressure, vacuum level, vapour temperature, condenser temperature, liquid addition, nitrogen flow, oxygen concentration, batch weight, drying time and endpoint conditions — with recipe-based operation sequencing the complete process. Since time alone isn’t always the best endpoint indicator, product temperature, vessel pressure, vapour temperature, condenser load, moisture sampling or torque behaviour can also be incorporated. A complete QuantumX system can include the vacuum mixer dryer, thermal control unit, vacuum pump, condenser, vapour filtration, solvent receiver, nitrogen system, oxygen analyzer, liquid dosing, load cells, automation, and upstream/downstream processing equipment.
From Raw Material to Finished Product
Through Proc-X Manufacturing Group Inc., QuantumX vacuum processing systems can be integrated into complete manufacturing lines:
Receiving → Storage → Conveying → Dosing → Weighing → Wet Processing → Mixing → Reaction → Coating → Granulation → Vacuum Drying → Cooling → Milling → Screening → Inspection → Filling → Packaging
This allows the complete process to be engineered as one production system rather than a collection of unrelated machines.
