QUANTUMX — PROC-X MANUFACTURING GROUP

QuantumX Ribbon Mixers

Precision mixing engineered around the material. QuantumX Ribbon Mixers are engineered for efficient, repeatable blending of powders, granules, minor ingredients, pastes and powder-liquid formulations across demanding industrial applications.

At the heart of every QuantumX ribbon mixer is a carefully engineered agitator system that moves material both radially and axially through the mixing chamber. The goal isn’t just to rotate product inside a vessel — it’s to create a controlled circulation pattern that minimises dead zones, reduces blend time, protects product integrity and produces consistent homogeneity from batch to batch.

Available in both horizontal and vertical configurations, ranging from standard atmospheric blending systems to fully integrated vacuum mixer and dryer configurations for applications requiring simultaneous mixing, deaeration, drying, solvent recovery, heating or cooling.

How a Ribbon Mixer Works

A ribbon mixer uses a horizontal or vertical vessel fitted with a specially engineered ribbon agitator. In a traditional horizontal design, the agitator consists of an inner and outer helical ribbon, arranged to move material in opposing axial directions while lifting, folding and circulating product through the vessel.

The outer ribbon moves material in one axial direction; the inner ribbon moves it in the opposite direction. This counter-current motion creates continuous material exchange through the entire batch — while the ribbon geometry also generates radial movement, from the vessel wall toward the centreline and back outward again.

The result is a three-dimensional mixing pattern based on:

This makes ribbon mixers particularly effective for free-flowing powders, granular products, powders with minor ingredients, powders requiring liquid addition, and formulations that benefit from moderate-shear blending.

Ribbon Geometry Matters

Not all ribbon mixers are equal. Two mixers can share the same nominal capacity, vessel diameter and even motor size — yet perform very differently because of differences in ribbon geometry.

QuantumX mixer design considers the complete interaction between ribbon diameter, flight width, pitch, number of flights, ribbon spacing, agitator clearance, vessel geometry, rotational speed, product density, particle size distribution and product rheology. Poorly optimised geometry can produce short-circuiting, stagnant zones, excessive mixing time or inconsistent dispersion of minor ingredients — so QuantumX ribbon systems are engineered to maximise active product movement through the entire chamber.

Increased Ribbon Surface Area

More active surface area engages more material per revolution — improving material turnover, axial and radial movement, minor ingredient dispersion, liquid distribution and heat-transfer interaction.

Optimised Ribbon Flights

Inner and outer flights, multiple helical sections, modified widths and pitch, or application-specific hybrid agitators — determined by how the product actually behaves.

Controlled Vessel Clearances

Engineered around equipment size, shaft deflection, operating temperature, product characteristics and mechanical loading — improving cleanability and product discharge.

Faster, More Efficient Batch Turnover

A well-designed ribbon mixer shouldn’t need excessive mixing time to compensate for poor agitator geometry. QuantumX focuses on rapid material circulation, so the full batch repeatedly passes through the active mixing zones.

This can mean:

What Are Ribbon Mixers Used For?

Ribbon mixers are among the most versatile industrial powder mixers available.

Combining powders with granulated materials where gentle-to-moderate mixing action is required.

Liquid Addition to Powders

Spraying oils, flavours, binders, fragrances, oleoresins or coatings onto powders via liquid injection, spray bars or atomising nozzles.

Coating Applications

Applying small quantities of liquid onto dry particles or granules while maintaining uniform distribution.

Pre-Blending

Preparing intermediate formulations before milling, extrusion, granulation, tableting, filling or downstream processing.

Heat Transfer Applications

With a jacketed vessel, the mixer can be used for product heating or cooling during blending.

Construction Materials

QuantumX Horizontal Ribbon Mixers

The traditional configuration for high-efficiency batch blending. A horizontal cylindrical or U-shaped vessel allows the ribbon agitator to produce strong axial and radial product movement.

Advantages: excellent blending efficiency, broad application range, relatively low operating speed, moderate shear, straightforward ingredient loading, large discharge openings, easy integration with upstream and downstream equipment, and good suitability for liquid addition.

Can be manufactured from laboratory scale through large industrial capacities, and integrated with load cells, automated ingredient dosing, liquid injection, lump breakers, choppers, heating and cooling jackets, vacuum systems, dust collection, pneumatic conveying, discharge screws, bagging systems and automated process controls.

QuantumX Vertical Ribbon Mixers

For applications where vertical processing geometry provides operational or process advantages. The vertical design uses a vertically oriented mixing chamber and a helical ribbon or screw-type agitator that circulates material upward and downward through the vessel.

Advantages: reduced floor-space requirement, compact equipment footprint, efficient product circulation, excellent suitability for vacuum processing, efficient heating and cooling, reduced shaft-seal exposure to the product bed, and favourable discharge characteristics — particularly attractive where mixing is combined with thermal processing.

Gravity assists the return movement of material, producing a continuous turnover pattern that’s especially effective for powders, granules, heat-sensitive materials, cohesive powders, products requiring vacuum drying, and processes involving controlled heating or cooling.

QuantumX Vacuum Ribbon Mixers & Dryers

Both horizontal and vertical QuantumX Ribbon Mixers can be engineered as vacuum mixers and dryers — turning the ribbon mixer into an integrated thermal processing system. Under vacuum, the boiling point of liquids drops, allowing moisture or solvents to evaporate at lower product temperatures — particularly valuable for heat-sensitive materials.

A single vessel can combine: mixing + heating + vacuum + evaporation + drying + cooling.

How Vacuum Ribbon Drying Works

The vessel operates under vacuum and may incorporate a heating or cooling jacket. Heat transfers through the vessel wall into the product while the ribbon agitator continuously turns and redistributes it — exposing fresh surface area, breaking up wet agglomerates, improving heat transfer, and releasing entrained vapour. The vacuum system removes generated vapours, routed through condensers, solvent recovery systems, vacuum filters, receivers, or product-specific emission control equipment as needed.

Horizontal Vacuum Ribbon Mixer & Dryer

Best where high product turnover, liquid distribution, batch access, large discharge openings, or strong axial mixing are needed.

Vertical Vacuum Ribbon Mixer & Dryer

Best where floor space is restricted, thermal processing is a priority, reduced seal exposure matters, high vacuum is required, or a compact footprint is preferred.

Why QuantumX Ribbon Mixers Are Different

QuantumX doesn’t treat the ribbon mixer as a commodity — it’s treated as a process machine, with every application considered against bulk density, particle size and shape, friability, moisture content, cohesive behaviour, flow characteristics, minor ingredient percentage, liquid addition rate, desired blend uniformity, heating and cooling requirements, cleaning requirements, containment, discharge characteristics and downstream processing.

Application-Specific Geometry

The agitator is engineered around the product, not scaled from a generic drawing.

Increased Active Mixing Surface

Strategically designed flights increase material engaged per revolution, improving circulation and turnover.

Engineered Product Flow

Predictable axial and radial movement through the full batch — not simply rotating the product bed.

Horizontal & Vertical Technologies

Either configuration, depending on the process requirement.

Vacuum Mixing & Drying

Both configurations can be engineered as vacuum mixers and dryers.

Complete Process Integration

Integrates with bulk handling, dosing, conveying, milling, screening, extrusion, inspection, filling and packaging via Proc-X.

Engineering Options

Sanitary & Hygienic Designs

For food, nutraceutical, pharmaceutical and other hygienic applications:

ATEX & Hazardous Area Designs

Powder processing can create combustible dust hazards. Systems can be engineered considering:

The correct protection strategy depends on material characteristics and process hazard analysis.

Heating & Cooling

Jacketed for temperature-controlled processes using hot water, chilled water, thermal oil, steam, glycol, or process-specific heat-transfer fluids. The agitator continuously renews the material exposed to the vessel wall, improving heat transfer versus a static vessel — with vacuum operation further enhancing drying performance where needed.

Liquid Addition Systems

Spray bars, atomising nozzles, metered liquid dosing, heated liquid systems, oil injection, flavour addition, oleoresin dosing, binder addition, and automated recipe control — coordinated with agitator speed and batch sequence to minimise localised wetting or agglomeration.

Choppers & High-Speed Intensifiers

For formulations prone to agglomeration or requiring enhanced dispersion, high-speed choppers or intensifier heads provide localised high-shear action alongside the ribbon’s primary bulk mixing — useful for dispersing minor ingredients, breaking soft agglomerates, and accelerating difficult blends.

Controls & Automation

PLC control, HMI operator interface, recipe management, variable-speed drives, automated ingredient addition, load-cell weighing, batch reporting, temperature and vacuum control, liquid dosing, alarm management and data logging — functioning as an integrated process module, not a standalone machine.

From Mixer to Complete Processing System

A mixer rarely operates in isolation. Through Proc-X Manufacturing Group Inc., QuantumX ribbon mixers integrate with complementary technologies across the complete process:

Receiving → Storage → Conveying → Dosing → Weighing → Mixing → Milling → Drying → Screening → Inspection → Filling → Packaging

One engineering group can address the complete process, rather than requiring you to coordinate multiple independent equipment suppliers.
