QUANTUMX — PROC-X MANUFACTURING GROUP

QuantumX Ploughshare Mixers

High-intensity mixing engineered for fast, uniform processing. QuantumX Ploughshare Mixers are engineered for fast, intensive and highly uniform mixing of powders, granules, cohesive materials, liquid-solid formulations and demanding industrial blends.

Unlike lower-intensity mixers that primarily rely on bulk displacement, the QuantumX ploughshare mixer creates a mechanically fluidized mixing zone inside the vessel. Specially shaped plough elements lift, divide, accelerate and project material throughout the chamber, creating rapid three-dimensional particle movement and intensive interparticle exchange.

The result is a highly efficient mixing environment capable of achieving excellent homogeneity in comparatively short batch times — including formulations involving powders with different bulk densities, difficult minor ingredients, cohesive materials, liquids added to powders, agglomeration, coating, conditioning, heating, cooling, reaction, and vacuum drying.

QuantumX ploughshare mixers are available in horizontal configurations only, including standard atmospheric mixers and fully engineered Vacuum Ploughshare Mixer & Dryer systems.

How a Ploughshare Mixer Works

A ploughshare mixer consists of a horizontal cylindrical mixing vessel with a centrally mounted horizontal shaft. Mounted along the shaft are specially engineered plough-shaped mixing elements. As the shaft rotates, each plough penetrates the product bed and accelerates material away from the vessel wall and into the central mixing zone.

Rather than simply pushing material around the vessel, the ploughs lift it, divide it, throw it, fold it, and continuously redistribute it — creating what is often described as a mechanically fluidized bed. Particles become temporarily suspended and separated from the dense static product bed, allowing materials to move rapidly through the vessel and repeatedly cross through different mixing zones.

The process creates simultaneous:

This highly dynamic action is what differentiates a true ploughshare mixer from conventional low-speed blending technologies.

Mechanical Fluidization — The Key to Ploughshare Mixing

A properly designed ploughshare mixer doesn’t simply rotate material around the vessel. The purpose of the plough geometry, shaft speed and vessel relationship is to create a controlled mechanically fluidized mixing environment. As the ploughs pass through the material, product is accelerated into the free space above and around the shaft — individual particles or agglomerates then move independently before being reincorporated into the product mass, producing extremely rapid redistribution of components throughout the vessel.

Mechanical fluidization is particularly valuable when blending materials that differ significantly in particle size, particle shape, density, concentration, or flow characteristics. Because particles are repeatedly separated and redistributed, the mixer can rapidly expose minor ingredients to a much larger portion of the total batch.

Plough Geometry Matters

Two mixers with the same vessel volume and motor power can perform very differently depending on plough profile, blade angle, plough width, plough spacing, plough orientation, shaft diameter, shaft speed, vessel diameter, number of ploughs, tip speed, and clearance to the vessel wall. QuantumX evaluates these variables as part of the overall process design, aiming to maximise productive product movement while minimising stagnant zones, unnecessary power consumption, material smearing, excessive heat generation, and uncontrolled shear.

QuantumX Plough Geometry

The plough profile penetrates deeply into the product bed while presenting sufficient active surface area to accelerate material away from the vessel shell, redirecting material into intersecting flow paths and creating multiple overlapping mixing zones.

Increased Active Mixing Surface

The relationship between active plough surface, vessel diameter, batch loading, rotational speed and material characteristics drives batch turnover, minor ingredient distribution, liquid dispersion and heat transfer.

Engineered Plough Arrangement

Plough positioning is calculated to maintain active mixing throughout the entire working length of the vessel, avoiding large inactive areas between mixing elements.

Controlled Tip Speed

Ploughs must rotate fast enough for strong mechanical fluidization, but excessive speed increases power consumption, product temperature, particle degradation and dust generation.

Controlled Plough-to-Vessel Clearance

Excessive clearance leaves a residual inactive product layer near the shell; too little risks mechanical interference from shaft deflection or thermal expansion.

What Are Ploughshare Mixers Used For?

Ploughshare mixers are used when a process requires more mixing intensity than conventional low-speed blending can provide.

High-Speed Powder Blending

Rapid homogenisation of dry powders where short cycle times and high product turnover are important.

Different Bulk Densities

The mechanically fluidized environment helps redistribute ingredients that might otherwise segregate.

Minor Ingredient Dispersion

Efficient incorporation of relatively small quantities of additives into a large carrier mass.

Liquid Addition to Powders

Liquids sprayed into the fluidized powder bed contact a much larger exposed particle surface.

Coating

Uniform application of oils, flavours, binders, active ingredients, fragrances, waxes and other liquids onto powders or granules.

Agglomeration

With controlled liquid addition and the right chopper configuration, the mixer can create controlled agglomerates or granules.

Deagglomeration

High-speed choppers or intensifiers break down soft lumps while the ploughshare rotor distributes material throughout the vessel.

Conditioning

Combines blending with moisture addition, heating, cooling, coating, reaction, or particle modification.

Thermal Processing

Jacketed QuantumX ploughshare mixers can be used for heating and cooling operations.

Vacuum Drying

Simultaneously mix, heat, evaporate moisture or solvent, and dry the material in a vacuum configuration.

Industries Using Ploughshare Mixers

QuantumX ploughshare mixers are used across industries where rapid mixing, liquid addition, coating, particle treatment or thermal processing is required.

Food Processing

The mechanically fluidized powder bed can be particularly advantageous for seasoning, flavour addition and coating applications.

Pharmaceutical

QuantumX Horizontal Ploughshare Mixers

The QuantumX Horizontal Ploughshare Mixer consists of a cylindrical horizontal vessel with a high-performance plough rotor running along the centreline.

This configuration provides: rapid batch turnover, intensive powder movement, short mixing times, strong minor ingredient distribution, excellent liquid addition capability, effective deagglomeration when equipped with choppers, and flexible integration into complete process systems.

QuantumX ploughshare mixers can be manufactured for laboratory, pilot and full-scale industrial production, and can incorporate load cells, automated feeding, liquid spray systems, choppers, intensifiers, heating and cooling jackets, vacuum operation, dust collection, pneumatic conveying, large discharge valves, automated controls, and downstream packaging or processing equipment.

Why Choppers Matter

One of the major advantages of a ploughshare mixer is the ability to combine bulk convective mixing with localized high-shear processing. QuantumX ploughshare mixers can incorporate one or more high-speed side-mounted choppers or intensifier heads. While the plough rotor moves the bulk material throughout the vessel, the chopper acts on material passing through its localized zone — helping break soft agglomerates, disperse liquids, distribute binders, control granulation, reduce lump formation, improve coating, and accelerate difficult mixing operations.

The combination of a high-speed chopper and mechanically fluidized bulk mixing can produce process effects that are difficult to achieve using a conventional ribbon mixer alone.

Liquid Addition in a Mechanically Fluidized Bed

When the plough rotor is operating correctly, the product is partially suspended and continuously redistributed — exposing a much larger effective particle surface area to the liquid spray. QuantumX systems can incorporate spray bars, atomizing nozzles, heated liquid dosing, oil injection, binder injection, flavour addition, oleoresin dosing, and automated metering systems, introducing liquid into the most active region of the fluidized bed to minimise localized overwetting, large wet lumps, inconsistent coating, and long post-addition blend times.

Agglomeration & Granulation

Liquid binders are introduced while the plough rotor rapidly circulates the material. High-speed choppers can then influence nucleation, agglomerate size, density, and final particle structure — tailored depending on whether the objective is light agglomeration, dust reduction, improved flowability, increased bulk density, or preparation for downstream drying or processing.

QuantumX Vacuum Ploughshare Mixer & Dryer

The QuantumX Vacuum Ploughshare Mixer & Dryer combines intensive mixing with controlled thermal processing under vacuum, transforming the ploughshare mixer into a multifunction process system capable of performing mixing, heating, evaporation, vacuum drying, solvent removal and cooling inside a single vessel. The same plough geometry that produces rapid mixing also continuously renews the product surface exposed to the heated vessel wall, significantly improving heat and mass transfer during drying.

How Vacuum Ploughshare Drying Works

The vessel operates under vacuum and is typically equipped with a heating or cooling jacket. The vessel is charged, the plough rotor begins circulating the product, thermal energy is introduced through the jacket, vacuum is applied, moisture or solvent begins to evaporate, generated vapour is removed from the vessel, the ploughs continuously expose new material surface, and drying continues until the required endpoint is achieved. Because vacuum lowers the boiling point of the liquid phase, evaporation can occur at lower product temperatures — particularly useful for heat-sensitive materials.

Why Ploughshare Geometry Helps Vacuum Drying

A static bed can develop a dry insulating layer near the heated surface while wetter material remains trapped further inside the batch. The QuantumX plough rotor continually disrupts this effect — material is repeatedly lifted from the wall, redistributed, broken apart, returned to the heated surface, and exposed to vacuum. This continuous surface renewal improves drying uniformity, heat-transfer efficiency, vapour release, and overall batch consistency.

Increased Surface Exposure for Faster Mass Transfer

Mechanical fluidization repeatedly separates and redistributes the particles, exposing new wet surfaces to the reduced-pressure environment. This effect is especially valuable for wet powders, filter cakes, pastes, agglomerated products, solvent-containing solids, and heat-sensitive materials. Depending on the material, choppers may also be used to break drying agglomerates and expose additional internal moisture.

Ribbon Mixer or Ploughshare Mixer?

Both technologies are highly effective, but they serve different process requirements.

Ribbon Mixer

Well suited to free-flowing powders, moderate mixing intensity, gentle blending, basic liquid addition, and applications where product degradation must be minimised.

Ploughshare Mixer

Generally more appropriate for higher mixing intensity, faster batch times, strong minor ingredient dispersion, density differences, liquid coating, deagglomeration, agglomeration, conditioning, thermal processing, or vacuum drying.

The correct technology should be selected based on the material and process — not simply equipment familiarity.

QuantumX Engineering — Beyond a Standard Ploughshare Mixer

QuantumX doesn’t treat the ploughshare mixer as a commodity vessel fitted with generic blades — the mixer is engineered as a process machine, considering material bulk density, particle size distribution, particle shape, cohesion, flowability, moisture, liquid addition, required shear, blend uniformity, desired cycle time, heat sensitivity, agglomeration tendency, thermal requirements, vacuum requirements, cleaning requirements, containment, hazardous-area classification, and downstream processing.

Why QuantumX Ploughshare Mixers Are Different

Application-Specific Geometry

Plough shape, size, spacing and orientation are selected around the actual process requirements, not scaled from a standard design.

Mechanically Fluidized Mixing

The rotor creates intense particle movement throughout the vessel for rapid three-dimensional redistribution.

Increased Active Mixing Surface

The plough profile engages and accelerates a significant portion of the product bed during each revolution.

Optimised Tip Speed

Operating speed achieves the required mechanical fluidization without unnecessary shear, heat or power consumption.

Chopper Integration

High-speed choppers or intensifiers can be added for deagglomeration, liquid dispersion, granulation and other demanding requirements.

Superior Liquid Distribution

Liquid is introduced directly into the active fluidized zone to improve particle contact and reduce localized overwetting.

Vacuum Mixing & Drying

QuantumX can transform the ploughshare mixer into a complete vacuum mixer and dryer for thermal processing and solvent recovery.

Complete Process Integration

Engineering Options

Sanitary & Hygienic Designs

For food, pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and other hygienic processing requirements:

ATEX & Hazardous Area Processing

Many powders and solvents present combustible or explosive hazards. Systems can be engineered considering:

The appropriate protection system depends on the product, process and formal hazard analysis.

Nitrogen Inerting

For oxidation-sensitive, flammable or solvent-bearing processes, QuantumX systems can be engineered for vessel purging, oxygen reduction, inert gas blanketing, controlled vacuum break, and solvent-process protection — with oxygen monitoring and automated interlocks integrated where required.

Heating, Cooling & Vapour Handling

Jacketed vessels support hot water, chilled water, steam, glycol, thermal oil, or process-specific fluids — the same vessel can be used for controlled cooling after drying. Vacuum dryer systems can be integrated with a complete vapour handling package including dust filters, condensers, solvent receivers, vacuum pumps, knock-out pots, condensate recovery, and process-specific vapour treatment, engineered around solvent properties, operating pressure, condensation temperature, vapour loading, and explosion protection requirements.

Processing Wet & Difficult Materials

Vacuum ploughshare mixers and dryers are particularly useful for wet powders, filter cakes, moist granules, pastes, cohesive solids, or solvent-wet materials. The plough rotor continuously breaks and redistributes the wet mass during drying, with choppers providing additional localized shear where needed — allowing mixing and drying to occur simultaneously rather than requiring multiple separate pieces of equipment.

Controls & Automation

PLC control, HMI operator interface, recipe management, variable-frequency drives, batch sequencing, automated ingredient addition, load-cell weighing, liquid dosing, chopper control, temperature and vacuum control, nitrogen control, pressure monitoring, drying endpoint logic, alarm management, and data logging — with integrated systems able to communicate with upstream and downstream process equipment.

From Mixing Machine to Process Reactor

One of the defining characteristics of the QuantumX ploughshare platform is its ability to evolve beyond a simple mixer. Depending on the configuration, the same machine can perform blending, coating, agglomeration, granulation, reaction, conditioning, heating, cooling, deaeration, evaporation, solvent removal, and vacuum drying — making it particularly valuable for processors seeking to consolidate multiple unit operations into one controlled system.

Through Proc-X Manufacturing Group Inc., QuantumX ploughshare mixers can form part of complete systems:

Receiving → Storage → Conveying → Macro Dosing → Micro Dosing → Weighing → Mixing → Coating → Drying → Milling → Screening → Inspection → Filling → Packaging

This allows the process to be engineered as a complete production system rather than a collection of unrelated equipment.
