QUANTUMX — PROC-X MANUFACTURING GROUP
QuantumX Paddle Mixers
Gentle, efficient mixing with broad process flexibility. QuantumX Paddle Mixers are engineered for fast, efficient and highly uniform blending of powders, granules, fragile ingredients, mixed-density formulations and products requiring controlled but lower-shear agitation.
Paddle mixers are one of the most versatile technologies in industrial powder processing because they can deliver strong convective mixing while minimising unnecessary particle degradation.
QuantumX offers all four configurations: Horizontal Paddle Mixers, Vertical Paddle Mixers, Horizontal Vacuum Paddle Mixers & Dryers, and Vertical Vacuum Paddle Mixers & Dryers — applicable across blending, coating, conditioning, heating, cooling, drying and vacuum-processing applications.
The key to performance isn’t simply the presence of paddles inside a vessel — it’s the relationship between paddle geometry, paddle angle, paddle spacing, shaft speed, vessel geometry, active surface area, product fill level and the material itself. QuantumX designs these elements as a complete mixing system.
How a Paddle Mixer Works
A paddle mixer uses a series of paddles mounted to one or more shafts to move material through the mixing chamber. As the paddles rotate, they lift, push, fold and redistribute the product. Unlike a ribbon mixer, which uses continuous helical flights to generate axial and radial circulation, a paddle mixer uses discrete mixing elements that repeatedly intercept portions of the product bed and move them into different regions of the mixer.
This creates rapid convective mixing through:
- Axial movement
- Radial movement
- Cross-flow
- Lifting
- Folding
- Continuous particle redistribution
Because the paddles are discrete rather than continuous, they can often provide excellent batch turnover while generating less resistance through the product bed — beneficial for fragile particles, low-density products, granules, cereal products, freeze-dried materials, coated particles, and formulations where maintaining particle integrity is important.
Paddle Geometry Matters
Not all paddle mixers perform the same way. QuantumX evaluates paddle width, length, angle, profile, shaft position, number of paddles, paddle spacing, rotational speed, vessel diameter, tip clearance, and batch fill level — the correct combination determines whether the mixer creates efficient product movement or simply rotates material around the vessel.
Increased Active Paddle Surface
Broad, strategically positioned paddle faces engage a greater portion of the product bed, improving batch turnover, ingredient distribution, liquid coating and heat transfer — balanced against torque, power demand and product compression.
Optimised Paddle Angle
Paddle angle controls whether material is pushed forward, returned, moved toward the centre or ends, lifted, or circulated radially — creating multiple intersecting flow patterns.
Controlled Mixing Intensity
Strong convective movement without necessarily high shear — attractive for friable, fragile, granular, low-density or coated products. Variable-frequency drives allow intensity to change through the batch.

QuantumX Horizontal Paddle Mixers
Uses a horizontal vessel fitted with one or more paddle shafts — single-shaft, dual-shaft, or application-specific multi-paddle arrangements.
Provides: fast batch turnover, broad flexibility, easy upstream and downstream integration, large discharge options, good cleaning access, excellent liquid addition capability, and efficient blending of powders and granules. Can be integrated with load cells, automated ingredient dosing, spray systems, choppers, lump breakers, heating or cooling jackets, vacuum systems, dust collection, discharge conveyors, and automated process controls.
Single-Shaft
Ideal for straightforward powder blending, moderate capacities, fragile materials, and applications requiring relatively gentle mixing.
Double-Shaft
Faster product turnover, more intensive cross-mixing, greater interaction between material zones, and higher throughput — the two agitators create overlapping mixing patterns for rapid homogenisation while maintaining controlled shear.
QuantumX Vertical Paddle Mixers
A vertically oriented mixing chamber with paddles positioned to create controlled upward, downward and radial product movement. Material can be lifted vertically, pushed radially, redirected downward, folded through the centre, and circulated along the vessel wall — with gravity contributing to the return flow, and paddle geometry designed to prevent the product from simply rotating as a single mass.
Horizontal — Often Preferred Where
High throughput is required, fast batch turnover is important, large discharge openings are needed, integration with conveying equipment matters, or frequent cleaning access is required.
Vertical — Often Preferred Where
Floor space is limited, gravity discharge is beneficial, vacuum processing is important, thermal processing is a major requirement, or a compact mixer-dryer system is preferred.
QuantumX engineers evaluate the complete process before recommending the appropriate configuration.
QuantumX Vacuum Paddle Mixers & Dryers
Both horizontal and vertical QuantumX paddle mixers can be engineered as Vacuum Paddle Mixers & Dryers — combining mixing, heating, vacuum, evaporation, drying and cooling inside a single process vessel. The paddles continuously redistribute the product while the vessel wall provides thermal energy; under vacuum, moisture or solvent can evaporate at a lower temperature than under atmospheric conditions, especially valuable for heat-sensitive products, solvent-containing materials, moist powders, filter cakes, fragile granules, and specialty chemical or pharmaceutical materials.
How Vacuum Paddle Drying Works
The process typically involves charging the material, starting the paddle agitator, introducing heat through the vessel jacket, applying vacuum, evaporating moisture or solvent, removing vapour, continuously redistributing the material, and cooling the product if required. The paddles continuously move wet material away from the heated surface and bring fresh material into contact with it, improving both heat transfer and mass transfer.
Why Paddle Mixing Works Well for Vacuum Drying
A static product bed can form an insulating layer near the vessel wall. The QuantumX paddle agitator continuously disrupts this layer — material is repeatedly lifted, folded, redistributed, exposed to the heated wall, and exposed to vacuum — improving drying uniformity, evaporation rate, heat-transfer efficiency, and final moisture consistency.
Vacuum Drying of Fragile Products
Paddle mixing can provide effective product movement while controlling mechanical stress, making the technology attractive for drying granules, coated particles, fragile crystals, freeze-dried materials, specialty foods, and high-value engineered materials — optimised to move material efficiently without excessive particle breakage.
Ribbon Mixer, Paddle Mixer or Ploughshare Mixer?
Selecting the correct mixer depends on the process.
Ribbon Mixer
Conventional dry powder blending, moderate mixing intensity, broad general-purpose applications, and straightforward powder-liquid addition.
Paddle Mixer
Fragile particles, granules, lower-shear mixing, rapid convective blending, coating, and applications where product integrity is important.
Ploughshare Mixer
Higher mixing intensity, mechanical fluidization, aggressive liquid dispersion, deagglomeration, agglomeration, and fast processing of difficult formulations.
QuantumX engineers can evaluate the process and recommend the most appropriate technology.

Engineering Options
Coating Applications & Choppers
Paddle mixers are particularly well suited to applying a liquid coating while maintaining particle integrity — typical applications include flavours, oils, functional ingredients, protective coatings, binders, fragrances, and active compounds. The paddle geometry provides strong product circulation without unnecessarily aggressive particle collisions. For additional localised shear, QuantumX paddle mixers can incorporate high-speed choppers or intensifiers to break soft lumps, disperse liquids, distribute minor ingredients, prevent wet agglomerates, and improve coating uniformity — combining relatively gentle bulk mixing with targeted high-shear action only where required.
